Min-sik Kim, a master’s student in the POSTECH Department of Electrical Engineering, and Myeong-ho Kim and Dong-chan Lee, integrated MS-PhD students in the Graduate School of Semiconductor Technology, advised by Professor Se-Won Shin, won the top prize in the master’s division of the Power Semiconductors category at the 2025 Hyundai Mobis Electrification Paper Competition. The prize includes KRW 10,000,000.

The team proposed an active gate driver circuit for silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, a next-generation power semiconductor technology, significantly improving switching performance. It also integrated a circuit that rapidly detects short-circuit conditions and protects the driven device—a feature not included in previous studies—to improve reliability.

The Hyundai Mobis Electrification Paper Competition covers research across electrification, including power semiconductors. By selecting and sharing outstanding papers from industry and academia, it aims to exchange the technical insights and academic achievements needed in industry.

The study is expected to strengthen Korea’s power semiconductor circuit design capabilities, an area previously considered relatively weak, and make practical contributions to highly efficient and reliable power conversion systems and improved technological competitiveness.
