Awards | 2025-12-09

Professor Emeritus Bumman Kim of POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering received the European Microwave Association’s Outstanding Career Award in September 2025.

A world-renowned scholar with more than 40 years of innovative achievements, Professor Kim made decisive contributions to establishing the modern Doherty architecture in microwave power amplifiers. He pioneered key technologies including HBT-based microwave amplifiers, early millimeter-wave MMICs, 100 GHz-class oscillators, and high-efficiency linear power amplifiers for 5G. His research has contributed significantly to mobile communications and microwave technology.

During 28 years as a POSTECH Electrical Engineering professor, he supervised 58 doctoral graduates and had a major influence on academia and industry through vigorous teaching and research. His active scholarly engagement also contributed greatly to the academic community.

In particular, his contributions to microwave power amplifiers changed the course of the technology and repeatedly offered the global community directions for future development.

Following the Microwave Application Award he received from IEEE MTT-S in 2023, this latest honor reaffirms the growing international recognition of his contributions to establishing microwave amplification technologies for wireless applications.
