Postdoctoral researcher Minsun Kwak, PhD student Kyungsoo Kim, and integrated MS/PhD students Hyeseung Hong, Sungrok Moon, and Hyejin Lee of POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor PooGyeon Park) won Gold at the 3rd Koh Young AI Competition 2025, hosted by the Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems (ICROS) and sponsored by Koh Young Technology Inc.

The competition took place on November 6, 2025, at Songdo Convensia in Incheon as an associated event of the 25th International Conference on Control, Automation, and Systems (ICCAS 2025). It aimed to identify outstanding talent in control, robotics, and AI and strengthen practical industrial problem-solving capabilities.

This year’s challenge was an industrial optimization problem: minimizing the total inspection cycle time of PCB automated optical inspection equipment. Participants had to optimize field-of-view placement and paths using actual equipment data.

Professor Park’s team achieved excellent performance through an innovative approach combining grid-based FOV candidate generation, mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), and heuristic algorithms, taking first place among 13 teams.

The award is regarded as an important achievement demonstrating the world-class competitiveness of POSTECH’s AI-based control and manufacturing automation research.
