[Award] Ji-hwan Lee (Master’s Student) Wins Outstanding Paper Award at the KIEES Summer Conference

Awards | 2025-10-21

Ji-hwan Lee, a master’s student in POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Wonbin Hong), received an Outstanding Paper Award at the 2025 Summer Conference hosted by the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science for “Holographic Time-Reversal Mirror for Single-Focus Beam Focusing in Non-Line-of-Sight Environments.”

Previous studies primarily implemented beam focusing through ideal phase mapping under line-of-sight conditions. This study overcame that limitation by applying time-reversal techniques to holographic antennas, enabling precise beam focusing even in non-line-of-sight environments.

In particular, the proposed method accurately extracted phase information distorted by obstacles and re-emitted waves after time reversal, successfully refocusing a beam at the desired location in actual non-line-of-sight conditions.

It also introduced an anisotropic tensor-based unit-cell design that allows continuous adjustment of slit angles, providing the distinctive advantage of freely controlling polarization.

Academically, the work presented a new paradigm for beam control in non-line-of-sight environments. Industrially, it established an important foundation for next-generation RF applications such as wireless power transfer, ultrahigh-resolution near-field sensing, through-wall imaging, and multiuser MIMO communications. Its excellence was recognized with an Outstanding Paper Award at the conference.
