Professor Kyung-Tae Kim’s Team Wins Two Outstanding Paper Awards at the KIEES Summer Conference

Master's student Seunghwan Kim and doctoral student Mingon Cho in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering, advised by Professor Kyung-Tae Kim, each won an Outstanding Paper Award for different research topics at the 2025 Summer Conference of the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science.

Outstanding Paper Award: Seunghwan Kim, master's student, and Inhyeok Lee, doctoral student. Paper: “A Modified RDA-Based Method for SFO Compensation in FMCW SAR.” The paper proposes estimating and compensating for sampling frequency offset (SFO) in radar systems using different local oscillators. It presents a signal model incorporating SFO in FMCW SAR and designs corresponding signal processing and an azimuth compression filter. Applying the method produced properly compressed SAR images even in the presence of SFO. The award recognizes its potential to improve image quality in radar systems based on different local oscillators.

Outstanding Paper Award: Mingon Cho, Inhyeok Lee, and Hyeondong Kim, doctoral students, and Otae Jang, integrated master's/doctoral student. Paper: “SAR Image Super-Resolution Network Based on a Point Scatterer Attention Module.” The paper proposes a point scatterer attention (PSA) module that encodes MUSIC-estimated point scatterer locations as binary masks and injects them into U-Net for SAR image super-resolution. The input consists of two channels, a low-resolution SAR image and a PS mask. Self-attention uses the average features of PS-mask-activated regions as queries to guide scatterer-centered reconstruction. Evaluation on measured MSTAR data showed improvement on every metric over the model without PSA, with clearer reconstruction of scatterer contours and main target structures. The award recognizes its potential to improve image quality in applications including ATR preprocessing and multistatic SAR.
