The Humantech Paper Awards ceremony, hosted by Samsung Electronics and jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and JoongAng Ilbo, took place at 11:00 a.m. on February 23 on the fifth floor of Samsung Electronics’ building in Seocho-dong, Seoul.
At this 17th competition, 1,423 papers were submitted from 110 schools. Approximately 600 judges spent three months selecting 94 winning papers, including twelve Gold winners. With total prizes of KRW 390 million, it is Korea’s largest paper competition. Established in 1994, it identifies undergraduate, graduate, and high school science talent in Korea and overseas who can help build an advanced science and technology nation in the 21st century.
Gold recipients included individual entrants Junseok Kwon (Seoul National University), Geunsoo Im (University of Illinois, USA), Younggi Han (KAIST), and Sunghoon Im (KAIST), and teams Changhyun Bang, Daesik Kang, and Sangmoon Kim (Seoul National University); Youngmin Song and Sungjun Jang (GIST); Taehun Yang and Dongbeom Pyo (KAIST); Mina Lee, Sangha Lee, and Jaehong Kim (KAIST); Dongwoo Ji and Yoonjae Seo (POSTECH); Joosung Kim, Heejoo Seo, and Soojin Shin (Kangwon Science High School); Jinyoung Seo and Dongjoo Shin (Korea Science Academy); and Hyemi Shin, Hara Kwon, and Jihoon Kim (Gyeongnam Science High School).
POSTECH Electrical Engineering recipients:
Gold: Dongwoo Ji and Yoonjae Seo, advisor Professor Jae-Yoon Sim: A 1 GHz fractional-N PLL with a bandwidth of 0.1 times the reference frequency, implementing noise filtering through a phase interpolator with an embedded FIR filter.
Bronze: Haegang Jeong, advisor Professor Hong-June Park: A transmitter circuit compensating crosstalk-induced jitter in parallel microstrip transmission lines by adding rectangular waveforms during transients.
