Professor Ki Hong Im’s team in POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering has recently been selected for a 2010 Outstanding Paper Award from the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS).
Paper: “Performance of single-carrier systems with multilevel bit-interleaved coded modulation.” Authors: Taekyung Kim, Chanho Choi, and Ki Hong Im (POSTECH).
The team drew attention at last year’s KICS Fall Conference by proposing a way to improve spectral efficiency in next-generation mobile communication technology, LTE.
The paper was recognized for using multilevel modulation to improve the spectral efficiency of multiple-access systems for mobile internet environments and establishing a theoretical basis for predicting their performance.
In particular, the multilevel modulation method was applied to standard single-carrier uplink communication technology transmitting from mobile devices to base stations. Related results were also published in consecutive issues of IEEE Transactions on Communications, a leading IEEE communications journal, in December 2010 and January 2011.
Only three of approximately 360 papers presented at the fall conference received Outstanding Paper Awards. The award ceremony is scheduled for the summer conference on Jeju Island this June.
