POSTECH Electrical Engineering Graduate Students Win International Conference Paper Awards
Doctoral student Suyong Kim, advised by Professor Sang Woo Kim, won Best Paper at the International SoC Design Conference (ISOCC 2013), held at BEXCO in Busan from the 17th to 19th, for “High-performance low-power application processor integrated with modem processor.”
With the semiconductor industry working to shrink ICs for smaller, thinner smart devices, Kim proposed a chip architecture reducing circuit size by removing the memory of the “Modern processor (MP),” as written in the source, and a new low-power method, autonomous power management (APM), operating without CPU intervention.
Doctoral student Geunhwi Gu, also advised by Professor Sang Woo Kim, won Best Paper for “Data Page Reconstruction based on Two-Dimensional Soft Output Viterbi Algorithm with Self-Reference for Holographic Data Storage,” presented at ISOM 2013 at Yonsei University's Songdo campus in Incheon in September.
For holographic storage, a candidate next-generation optical storage medium, Gu proposed two-dimensional soft-output Viterbi decoding with a self-reference process as the maximum-likelihood decoder in two-dimensional partial-response maximum-likelihood data-page reconstruction. It was recognized for strong performance, low computational complexity, and suitability for parallel processing in real systems.
Electrical Engineering graduate student Jooseung Kim, advised by Professor Bumman Kim, also won Best Paper at APMC 2013, held from the 5th to the 8th at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul. End.
