Jooseung Kim, 26, a graduate student in POSTECH Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Bumman Kim), received a Best Student Paper Award at an international conference.

At the Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC), held from the 5th to the 8th at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, he presented “Envelope-Tracking Power Amplifier with Enhanced Back-Off Efficiency Using Average Switch Current Control of Supply Modulator.”

Power amplifiers in portable devices such as smartphones consume substantial power. The paper proposes using an envelope amplifier to dramatically reduce that consumption.

Of 418 papers presented, ten, including Kim’s, received Best Student Paper Awards.

APMC brings together academics, researchers, graduate students, and industry participants interested in microwaves to share advanced technologies through research presentations. It rotates among Asian locations annually and will be held in Japan next year.
