POSTECH graduate students have warmed hearts by rescuing a man in his fifties from drowning.
The Pohang Coast Guard reported that at approximately 10:15 p.m. on the 4th, five people, including Hoyoung Kim, 24, a graduate student in POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering, and Sungho Park, 24, a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry, saved a 52-year-old man surnamed Kim who had fallen into the water near Dongbin Pier in Buk-gu, Pohang.
Kim and Park were on their way to church when they heard someone calling for help. Following the sound, they found a man struggling in the water after he had lost his footing while walking along Dongbin Pier intoxicated.
Hoyoung Kim worked to rescue him while some nearby citizens ran to the Coast Guard’s Pohang outpost to report the incident. Working together, they quickly saved his life.
A Pohang Coast Guard official said that the students’ prompt reporting and good deed had saved a precious life in a nighttime emergency that could have proved fatal. The official said the five rescuers, including Kim, would receive letters of appreciation from the station chief.
The rescued man was reportedly treated at the emergency room of Pohang Sunlin Hospital and returned home at approximately 3 a.m. on the 5th, with his life no longer in danger.
