Joint development of key technology to improve mobile-communications battery efficiency.
POSTECH is teaming up with Germany's Rohde & Schwarz, a world-leading communications-network instrumentation company, to develop technology that improves mobile battery efficiency. POSTECH's Microwave Integrated Circuits Laboratory will receive advanced equipment, including power amplifiers and measurement systems, and pursue high-efficiency power-amplifier research through exchanges and technical cooperation. Representatives of both organizations will sign a research agreement at 13:30 on the 11th in POSTECH's LG Research Building.
As mobile standards shift to high-speed LTE and LTE-A, competition to improve battery efficiency is intensifying. Interest is particularly focused on envelope-tracking power amplifiers (ET-PA), which can improve efficiency by over 20–30% through active voltage control, and Doherty power amplifiers.
Laboratory director and EE Professor Bumman Kim is a world authority on mobile-communications power-amplifier technology. Cooperation with Rohde & Schwarz, which has globally competitive wireless measurement expertise, is expected to accelerate development of core technology. Kim said the equipment provides an optimized solution for power-amplifier research that will greatly facilitate development, and expressed hope for more active cooperation. Rohde & Schwarz Korea CEO Yong-Deuk Kim said the collaboration should provide a strong foundation for developing and disseminating solutions and pledged support for technological development in Korea's communications market.
POSTECH Microwave Integrated Circuits Laboratory: Directed by Professor Bumman Kim, the laboratory continuously researches power-amplifier efficiency. Kim, an internationally recognized authority, became an IEEE Fellow in 2007. Over the past decade he has delivered about 100 invited research talks worldwide. At the 2013 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference at COEX, Seoul, he delivered the keynote “Past, Current, and Future Power Amplifier Technology.”
