Donggi Kim (Electrical Engineering PhD Student) Receives IBM Scholarship
A POSTECH graduate student has attracted attention by receiving an IBM scholarship. The recipient is Donggi Kim, 31, a PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Seungjoo Yoo).
Kim has been selected for the IBM Ph.D. Scholarship, awarded to doctoral students to nurture outstanding talent, and will receive USD 20,000. He was recognized for exceptional research achievements, including five papers—four at international conferences and one in a journal.
Since May, Kim has been undertaking a year-long overseas research placement at IBM in Austin, USA. He is studying flash translation layers (FTLs) for high-performance, highly reliable server SSDs.
SSD stands for solid state disk. SSDs have attracted attention as replacements for hard disks and are now widely used. To function like a hard disk, an SSD requires firmware called an FTL. The performance of the FTL greatly affects the SSD’s performance and lifespan, making efficient FTL design very important.
