Grand Prize in Radio Science Student Paper Competition

Sunghyun Lee and Minseok Kang of Electrical Engineering Win Grand Prize and Another Society’s Outstanding Paper Award

POSTECH Electrical Engineering graduate students Sunghyun Lee, 25, and Minseok Kang, 28, and advisor Professor Kyung-Tae Kim won the Grand Prize at the 2014 Radio Science Undergraduate/Graduate Student Paper Competition, jointly hosted by KIEES and the Korea Communications Agency.

Their paper was “Real-Time High-Resolution ISAR Imaging Using Frequency Spectrum Synthesis with a Planar Array Antenna Transmitting Stepped-Chirp Waveforms.”

The paper was highly regarded for addressing signal-processing problems associated with conventional stepped-frequency or chirp waveforms, forming high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar images needed to identify target scattering mechanisms accurately, and substantially reducing image formation time to improve real-time target identification.

The ceremony was held on the morning of November 21 at COEX, Seoul.

The students also recently had a paper selected for an Outstanding Paper Award at the KICS Spring Microwave and Electromagnetic Conference. Among methods for ISAR imaging of flying targets, stepped-chirp waveforms require compensation for phase errors associated with target motion. Their paper used particle swarm optimization for effective compensation, enabling high-quality ISAR images in real time.
