Introducing an integrated industry–university faculty system: companies participate in recruiting faculty.

POSTECH, Korea's first research university, is preparing a new system to contribute to national economic development together with industry. With the establishment of the LG Display–POSTECH Industry–University Cooperation Center as its first partnership, the university is introducing Korea's first integrated industry–university faculty system.
This new personnel system respects companies' input: through consultation, POSTECH hires researchers needed by industry as regular faculty members and actively reflects industrial demand in their research activities. POSTECH was founded to contribute to national development by transferring university research to industry. The new system extends that mission and provides a way for the university to contribute directly to economic development.
Through these appointments, POSTECH seeks smoother communication with industry and stronger collaboration between existing faculty and companies. Building related technology networks within the university should enhance its competitiveness. University research could be applied directly in industry and help revitalize the economy, while education could cultivate practically skilled people that companies need.
Companies gain a faculty counterpart at POSTECH, a globally competitive science and engineering university, who can continuously carry out needed research. They can address immediate technical problems and pursue challenging, future-oriented research. Students participating in this work gain early experience with real industrial problems. Companies can therefore expect benefits in developing new markets and securing outstanding talent as well as obtaining a research counterpart.
The first partner is LG, which has long maintained close ties with POSTECH, and specifically LG Display, with which joint research has recently been active. The center will manage research with LG Display and cultivate talent tailored to its needs. Integrated faculty will be recruited to oversee research and enable closer collaboration. Two appointments are planned this year. Starting with this partnership, POSTECH plans to broaden cooperation with other companies and initially establish ten research organizations.
POSTECH President Doh-Yeon Kim said the center and faculty system would be an ideal model of industry–university cooperation, enhancing both partners' global competitiveness through close research collaboration and helping them overcome the low-growth era together.
Beginning with this faculty system, POSTECH will introduce further measures to deepen cooperation with industry and strengthen competitiveness. Its aim is to open the university's doors widely to companies and establish a new path for both to overcome low growth. Moving beyond its role as a research university, POSTECH will identify industry needs, conduct needed research together with companies, and work with them to create new value.
