Professor PooGyeon Park's paper on stability analysis of time-delay systems ranks first among Automatica papers most cited over the past five years.
The paper published in 2011 by Park, 51, of POSTECH Electrical Engineering, topped Automatica's list of the twenty most cited papers from the past five years and is featured on its website's main page. Automatica updates this ranking monthly, and Park's paper was the most cited among those published since January 2010.
Scopus records 398 citations, compared with 316 for the second-ranked paper published a year earlier, indicating its quality and influence. Automatica and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control are the most prestigious journals in automation and control.
Time delays are major causes of instability and degraded system performance. Stability analysis of time-delay systems is therefore an important, widely researched control-theory problem. For systems with time-varying delays, finding the minimum of a reciprocally convex combination has been difficult, and previous studies commonly approximated the combination to obtain its minimum.
Seeking stability conditions without such approximations, Park developed a theorem on the minimum of reciprocally convex combinations and published it in Automatica in 2011. It directly obtains the minimum using properties of convex combinations, without approximating the reciprocally convex combination.
Since publication, the theorem has become an essential citation in almost all papers on time-delay system stability. Researchers expect it to remain first through December 2016 because it will also be included in next year's ranking of papers published since January 2011.
