Minhwan Seo Wins Best Student Paper Award
Minhwan Seo, a master’s student in the Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Sang Woo Kim), received a Best Student Paper Award at an international conference.
On September 11, he presented “Detection of Internal Short Circuit in Li-ion Battery by Estimating its Resistance” at ICISIP 2016 (The 4th IIAE International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Image Processing 2016) and received the award.
When lithium-ion batteries are used, overcharging, overdischarging, or manufacturing defects can cause internal short circuits. Detecting these faults is necessary because they can lead to thermal runaway, including explosions and fires.
The paper proposed and validated a new indicator for diagnosing internal short circuits by estimating internal battery parameters, earning recognition for this work.
A total of 101 papers were presented at the conference. Four, including Seo’s paper, were selected for Best Student Paper Awards.
