Myocardial infarction, commonly called a heart attack, requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. EE Professor Jeong-Soo Lee and Dr. Ki-Hyun Kim of the Future IT Innovation Laboratory, together with a NASA team, developed a diagnostic sensor using a three-dimensional nanomesh to detect troponin I, a protein used to diagnose myocardial infarction. They reported it in Biosensors & Bioelectronics, a leading electrochemistry journal.
The sensor offers a 20-fold improvement over existing detection methods. Its honeycomb structure improves signal transduction compared with conventional nanowire sensors, while its large surface area improves the detection limit. Its precision in selectively detecting myocardial infarction has attracted academic and industrial interest.
