Professor Kyeongcheol Yang of the Department of Electrical Engineering received this year’s Haedong Academic Grand Prize at the 2015 Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences Haedong Awards ceremony.

The Haedong Awards were established to encourage research and industrial development in Korea’s communications sector. The Academic Grand Prize is presented to a member with outstanding academic achievements in Korea and internationally over the preceding ten years.

Professor Yang has actively pursued research on error-control technologies and sequences to improve the reliability of digital communication systems, publishing in SCI-level international journals and filing domestic and international patents.

He was highly recognized for developing efficiently encodable quasi-cyclic LDPC code design methods, new CDMA sequences, and frequency-hopping sequences and incorporating them into standards for diverse communication systems. He also applied error-control technologies to solve longstanding communication-system problems.

After graduating from Seoul National University, Professor Yang earned his doctorate at the University of Southern California. He served as an assistant professor in Hanyang University’s Department of Electronic and Communication Engineering from 1993 to 1998 and has been with POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering since 1999.

He has also served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, a leading electrical engineering journal covering communications and information theory.

The award ceremony took place on December 4 in the Royal Ballroom of the Seoul Palace Hotel.
