Hye-yeon Choi, a master's student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Sang-woo Kim, received the WISET–ICROS Young Researcher Award at ICROS 2017 for “A Billet Number Recognition Algorithm Using a Convolutional Neural Network.”

The paper applied a convolutional neural network (CNN), commonly used for image processing in deep learning, to recognizing numbers on billets produced by continuous casting in the steel industry.

Its end-to-end algorithm simultaneously locates and classifies billet-number characters, with particular significance in detecting eight characters with a specified structure together. It is expected to improve steelmaking operational efficiency through automatic billet-number recognition.

The ceremony took place on the 11th in Baeksong Hall alongside a special session of WISET, the Korea Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
