Professor Hojin Song of POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering has recently signed a research agreement worth approximately JPY 4.5 million per year with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), one of the world’s three major telecommunications network companies.

The agreement supports research to secure core ultrahigh-frequency technologies for exploiting terahertz waves, a next-generation electromagnetic resource, along with personnel exchanges such as graduate student internships.

The research aims to implement core electronic circuits, packages, and modules for communication, radar, and nondestructive analysis application systems using the terahertz band, from 100 GHz to 10 THz, described as humanity’s last unexplored radio resource. Ultimately, it seeks to identify and realize new industrial applications of terahertz waves.

NTT was formed in 1985 through the privatization of Japan’s telecommunications public corporation, founded in 1952, and is Asia’s largest telecommunications network company by revenue.

NTT’s central research organization, NTT Labs, has consistently produced world-class results in core fields required by the information and communications industry, including materials, electronics, electrical engineering, communications, information, security, and computing. It operates independently with an internally funded annual research budget exceeding approximately KRW 3 trillion.

The agreement is expected to initiate broader research exchanges between NTT and POSTECH in ultrahigh-speed semiconductor technologies, circuits, and diverse applications.
