Jaeho Choi, a master’s student, and Jieun Kim, a combined MS/PhD student in POSTECH Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Kyung-Tae Kim), received the IEEE AP Seoul Chapter Best Paper Award for “People Counting Algorithm using an IR-UWB Radar” at the 2018 Summer Conference hosted by the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science.

The paper implemented a system that estimates the number of people within a radar’s detection range in real time by constructing feature vectors from IR-UWB radar returns and training a classifier with them. The technology is expected to be used for sensing in future smart cities and Internet of Things environments.
