Junho Park, a master’s student in POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (thesis advisor: Professor Wonbin Hong), won Silver at the 14th Samsung Electro-Mechanics Paper Awards for “Optically Invisible Antenna-on-Display (AoD) for Millimeter-wave 5G Cellular Devices.”

To overcome limited space and technical constraints in mobile devices, the paper introduced the first concept of a transparent antenna embedded in an OLED/LCD display area and implemented it in the 28 GHz band.

The developed transparent electrode is extremely thin at 2,000 Å and achieves commercial-level optical transparency, potentially reducing the space required for wireless communication circuits dramatically. Beyond mobile handsets, it is expected to apply to devices incorporating displays or glass, including tablets, TVs, and vehicles, and help address the miniaturization of 5G wireless communication modules.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics operates the paper awards to encourage young talent’s free thinking and latent technological abilities. At this 14th competition, 12 winning papers, including two Gold winners, were selected through abstract review, full-paper review, and presentation evaluation across five fields: materials technology, manufacturing technology, device and process technology, wireless RF and software, and foundational technology.

The award ceremony is scheduled for November 16 at Samsung Electro-Mechanics Dream Plaza.
