Professor Junil Choi of POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering has been selected as one of ten promising Young Researchers of the Year in natural sciences and engineering, life sciences, and humanities and social sciences, jointly identified by the National Research Foundation of Korea and Elsevier.
Co-organizer Elsevier, the world’s largest scholarly publisher, analyzed citations to papers in 21,951 major international journals through its Scopus database. The National Research Foundation selected the final recipients from researchers aged 39 or younger based on criteria including the number of top-one-percent papers, citation indices based on overseas citations, and first-author papers.
After seven recipients last year, this year’s awards went to five researchers in natural sciences and engineering, three in life sciences, and two in humanities and social sciences.
Professor Choi studied electrical engineering at Seoul National University, earned his doctorate at Purdue University, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin before joining POSTECH in July 2016. Since then, he has actively researched next-generation wireless communications.
His work has also been highly recognized in internationally prestigious journals and conferences, including the IEEE GLOBECOM Best Paper Award in 2013, IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award in 2015, and IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Young Researcher Award in 2017.
