Youngno Yoon, a PhD student in POSTECH Electrical Engineering (thesis advisor: Professor Wonbin Hong), received an Honorable Mention in the IEEE AP-S/URSI 2019 Student Paper Competition for “A Dual-polarized FSS on a Single Substrate using Highly-coupled Inter layer Inductance.”
The paper proposed an active frequency-selective surface incorporating variable-capacitance components for vertical and horizontal impedance control. A unit cell maximized mutual inductance between layers of a periodic structure to enable rapid impedance variation.
Active control of dual-polarized electrically induced transparency is expected to apply to civilian base-station and satellite antennas and to military applications including radomes and stealth.
The study received an Honorable Mention for superior performance relative to previously published research worldwide. IEEE AP-S/URSI is the world’s largest international conference of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. The 2019 Student Paper Competition received 195 submissions.
