POSTECH Electrical Engineering graduate students Yeeun Jang and Jaeyoung Park (advisor: Professor Young-Jin Kim) received a Best Paper Award at the 2019 Joint Spring Conference of Three Power Engineering Research Groups, held in April. Their paper was titled “Optimal HVAC System Operation Using Machine Learning under Time-Varying Retail Prices.”

The paper proposed a machine-learning approach to modeling and optimizing building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. It used operational data to model a building’s thermal response and demonstrated that accounting for time-varying retail prices can minimize operating costs while improving occupants’ thermal comfort.
