Jae-ho Choi, a Ph.D. student, and Ji-eun Kim, an integrated master's/Ph.D. student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering, advised by Professor Kyung-tae Kim, received the Top Excellence Award (Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science President's Award) at the 18th Student Radio Science Paper Competition in 2019, jointly organized by the Korea Communications Agency and the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science.
Their paper, “Design of a DNN-Based People-Counting Estimation System Using IR-UWB Radar,” designed a network model suited to radar signal characteristics to effectively apply a deep learning framework to IR-UWB radar-based people counting. It also proposed a way to train the model with limited data.
The proposed method was highly recognized for delivering more accurate estimates than existing methods.
