Seung-sik Moon, a master's student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Young-joo Lee, received a Distinguished Design Award at the 2019 IEEE Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC), held November 4–6 in Macau.

Co-recipients were master's students Hyun-hoon Lee, Young-hoon Byun, and Jong-min Park; master's graduate Seok-ha Hwang; and Professors Seung-gu Lee and Young-joo Lee.

In “FPGA-based sparsity-aware CNN accelerator for noise-resilient edge-level image recognition,” the team proposed a CNN architecture that maintains strong recognition performance even with noisy inputs.

They also proposed a new hardware-efficient pruning technique and designed a low-power system-on-chip solution to support it, validating the design on an FPGA.
