Vice Minister Mi-Ok Moon, Pohang Mayor Kang-Deok Lee, and Other Guests Attend; Technical Seminars Also Held

POSTECH’s Scalable Quantum Computing Technology Convergence Platform Center, directed by Electrical Engineering Professor Jae-Yoon Sim, opened on November 28 in the LG Research Building. Approximately 100 guests attended, including Vice Minister of Science and ICT Mi-Ok Moon, Pohang Mayor Kang-Deok Lee, and POSTECH Vice President Joon Won Park.

Selected in June for the ministry’s Engineering Research Center program, the center will build Korea’s first scalable quantum computing platform. It will develop the country’s first quantum computer and enabling technologies, establish an industrial hub through cloud services, and train core quantum engineering professionals.

Quantum computers use quantum-mechanical principles and offer computing performance described as millions of times greater than conventional supercomputers, with potential uses across defense, science, medicine, pharmaceuticals, automotive, aerospace, and almost every industry.

Professor Sim said quantum technologies have steadily advanced for forty years, and with major global IT companies now participating, the “dream computer” is approaching reality. He aims to build high-performance quantum computers and develop a global technology platform for quantum researchers.

Alongside the opening, the center hosted seminars featuring Dr. Hyukshin Kwon of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Professor Dohun Kim of Seoul National University, and Director Junyoung Jang of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology.
