Single-Chip IoT Platform Establishes a Foundation for Convergence Research
Professor Jae-Yoon Sim of the Department of Electrical Engineering has been selected as February’s Scientist and Engineer of the Month by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
Professor Sim was recognized for implementing Korea’s first single-chip wireless Internet of Things platform operating with only nanowatt-level power—one nanowatt is one-billionth of a watt—thereby establishing a foundation for diverse IoT convergence research, including healthcare and smart cities.
As countries worldwide compete to improve computer performance and efficiency through technologies such as miniature computers for IoT sensor networks and quantum computers, the award for Professor Sim, who succeeded in developing Korea’s first single-chip computing system (SoC), has attracted particular attention.
Professor Sim currently heads the Scalable Quantum Computing Technology Convergence Platform Center.
He described integrated circuit design as engineering that requires an artistic sensibility to creatively combine transistor “Lego blocks” into something new. He expressed hope that the research would serve as enabling technology for Korea’s system semiconductor development in areas such as nano/biosensor materials, implant-based diagnostic medicine, and battery and antenna component technologies.
The Scientist and Engineer of the Month Award recognizes researchers who contribute to scientific and technological advancement through outstanding research. Recipients receive a ministerial award and KRW 10 million.
