[Award] PhD Students Gi-Bong Kang and Jaeho Choi Receive Excellence Award in the 2020 Student Radio Science Paper Competition

Awards | 2021-04-06

Gi-Bong Kang and Jaeho Choi, PhD students in POSTECH Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Kyung-Tae Kim), received the Excellence Award (KIEES President’s Award) at the 19th Student Radio Science Paper Competition in 2020, jointly hosted by the Korea Communications Agency and the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science. Their paper was titled “Analysis of Micro-Doppler Effects of Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Actual Flight.”

For a rigorous analysis of micro-Doppler signals, the paper developed a new model of radar returns from small UAVs and theoretically explained the relationship between extracted micro-Doppler features and the UAVs’ physical parameters. It was particularly recognized for explaining this relationship using the Doppler spectrum rather than conventional approaches.
