Doctoral Student Wins Best Paper at a Leading IEEE Power Electronics Conference

A major advance in efficient power transfer, a core electric vehicle technology.

Ilsu Jeong, 33, a doctoral student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering, has attracted attention by winning a best paper award at a leading conference where professors and institute/company researchers present their work. His paper, coauthored with Professor Kwanghee Nam and presented at the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE 2013) in Colorado, United States, September 15–19 last year, was selected for second place among the three best papers.

Approximately 1,200 participants from universities and industry attended, with about 800 papers presented. After a rigorous review lasting about six months based on interest, importance, citation value, originality, and industrial application, three best papers were selected, and recipients were recently notified by email.

Jeong's paper concerns analysis and control of synchronous motors for electric vehicles: “Extended MTPA with Cross-Coupling Inductances for Electrically Excited Synchronous Motors Cross Coupling,” described in Korean as optimal torque control of wound-field synchronous motors using inductances. It simulates nonlinear cross-coupling effects under maximum-load operation through electromagnetic analysis and models motor parameter/inductance changes while accounting for core saturation. The analysis and new model yield optimal torque/current equations for each load, validated experimentally and compared with previous methods.

IEEE hosts many electrical/electronics conferences annually, attended mainly by professors and institute/company researchers. Rigorous screening makes even presenting a paper meaningful for graduate students; selection among just three best papers is particularly unusual. Four POSTECH Electrical Engineering graduate students also drew attention by presenting papers at IEEE ISSCC in San Francisco in February.
