Han-young Choi, a master's student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Kyung-tae Kim, received an Outstanding Paper Award at the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science's 2021 Summer Conference for “Improving Detection Performance through Coherent Integration of IR-UWB Radar.”
The research studied effective detection of faint radar signals from moving targets behind walls. By transforming the received signal's domain and aligning target signals, it extracted and detected targets under extremely low signal-to-noise conditions. The approach can also apply to distant targets and low-observable targets.
Because radar uses the physical properties of its operating frequency band and signal phase, it can work in environments where cameras, LiDAR, and infrared sensors cannot detect targets. The research was highly regarded for making effective use of these advantages.
