Dongseop Lee, an integrated MS/PhD student, and Suho Jang, a master’s student in POSTECH Electrical Engineering (thesis advisor: Professor Wonbin Hong), won the Excellence Award (Society President’s Award) at the 20th Radio Science Undergraduate/Graduate Student Paper Competition in 2021, covering radio technology and policy.
The Korea Communications Agency and Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science hold the competition annually to identify and develop talent and support radio technology and policy. Fields include emerging radio technologies and applications, 5G/6G policy, antennas, and core technologies for passive/active components, devices, and systems. The authors won after two rigorous assessment stages among twenty finalists.
Their paper, “Accurate Electromagnetic and Physical Characterization of Antenna Radome’s at Millimeter-wave using Real-time Inverse Estimation Method,” proposed real-time inverse estimation (RISE), a new methodology for extracting unknown radomes’ electrical and physical properties in real time.
The work demonstrated future technology for RF-based inspection applications, including radar sensing, defect verification, broad analysis, and rapid damage diagnosis. It received the Excellence Award for originality, excellence, and its distinctive integration of radio science, radar, and advanced materials engineering.
