Youngno Yoon, a PhD student in POSTECH Electrical Engineering (thesis advisor: Professor Wonbin Hong), won second prize in the Best Student Paper competition at the 2021 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting.
IEEE AP-S/URSI is the world’s largest international conference organized by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. This year, 189 papers entered the Student Paper Competition. The authors placed second after three rigorous review stages among eleven finalists.
Their paper was “Achieving Hemispherical Beam Coverage for a 39 GHz Integrated Lens featuring Double-Elliptical Boundaries through sequential GO and multiple Scattering.”
It proposed the first design methodology combining electromagnetics and geometrical optics with particle swarm optimization, applied it to a commercial millimeter-wave base-station antenna, and demonstrated millimeter-wave 5G beamforming.
The work was recognized for originality, excellence, and its distinctive multidisciplinary integration of radio science, optics, and applied mathematics.
