Professor Won-bin Hong's team in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering and Chokwang Paint fabricated and demonstrated a reflector that uses paint to control radio-wave reflection angles and deliver stable 5G signals to receivers. The results were reported by various media outlets.
The strong directionality of the 28 GHz millimeter-wave band used for 5G creates areas with weak reception, traditionally requiring bulky repeaters or boosters.
The demonstration showed that a paint-based reflector can adjust the reflection angle according to the incident angle without a separate power supply, confirming applicability in real indoor environments.
The technology could be used in telecommunications equipment, defense, ships, aviation, and other fields. Beyond 5G, Wi-Fi, and LTE, it is expected to contribute to future 6G infrastructure using sub-terahertz bands.
