Seung-woo Son, a master's student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Jae-ho Lee, received an Outstanding Paper Bronze Award at the 35th IPIU 2023, organized by the Korean Institute of Broadcast and Media Engineers, for “DSP: Distill the Knowledge Only by a Subset of Patches.”

The Workshop on Image Processing and Image Understanding (IPIU), now in its 35th year, is one of Korea's largest image processing and computer vision events alongside KCCV. This year, it featured 280 papers.

The paper was the first to identify the excessive additional computation required by knowledge distillation, a widely used model compression technique. It proposed image masking to reduce the additional computation for Vision Transformer knowledge distillation by 50–75% or more without reducing performance.
