[Award] Doctoral Student Daehyeon Kim Receives Honorable Mention at IEEE APS/URSI 2023

Awards | 2023-05-25

Daehyeon Kim, a doctoral student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Wonbin Hong, received Honorable Mention in the Student Paper Competition at the 2023 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (IEEE AP-S/URSI) for “Dual-polarized Metasurface Unit Cell using a sub-10-μm Thin Liquid Crystal Layer at 38 GHz.”

To improve response speed, one of the main weaknesses of liquid-crystal-based metasurfaces, the paper proposes a beamforming metasurface using a liquid crystal layer much thinner than the wavelength. Strong coupling between complementary patterns enables operation even with this very thin layer. The proposed structure uses active-matrix driving, as in flat-panel displays, to reduce control-wiring complexity while enabling two-dimensional beamforming. Its superior performance compared with research published worldwide earned Honorable Mention.

IEEE AP-S/URSI is the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society's largest international conference worldwide and is held this year in Portland, United States. A total of 221 papers were submitted to the 2023 Student Paper Competition, among which Kim's paper received Honorable Mention.
