[Award] Beomhyeon Kim Wins the 1st Prize Best Student Paper Award at IEEE iWAT 2023

Awards | 2023-05-25

Beomhyeon Kim and Dongseop Lee, integrated master's/doctoral students in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Wonbin Hong, won the 1st Prize Best Conference Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT).

Organized by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (IEEE AP-S), iWAT is a leading international antenna conference where experts share the latest developments in antenna design, advanced electromagnetic materials, theoretical and practical aspects of small antennas, medical antennas, millimeter-wave and terahertz technologies, and metamaterials. This year's event was held in Aalborg, Denmark.

Together with master's student Myeongjin Hwang, who won the 2nd Prize Best Conference Paper Award, the group achieved the first instance in the conference's history of a single group winning first and second prizes in the relevant categories.

The authors presented “mmWave Mobile Devices with Reconfigurable Broadside and Endfire Radiation using Shared Aperture Antenna-on-Display and Antenna-in-Package.” The paper implements Antenna-on-Display and Antenna-in-Package technologies in a shared-aperture structure, proposing a method that enables compact packaging within devices while maximizing millimeter-wave coverage efficiency. They integrated it into a commercial millimeter-wave device and validated it experimentally.

The study received the award for its originality, innovation, significance to the antenna and propagation community, potential impact, and technical merit.
