[Award] Professor Wook Sung Kim Receives Ministerial Commendation for the 57th Science Day

Professor Wook Sung Kim of POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering has been selected for a ministerial commendation commemorating the 57th Science Day, administered by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

A leading expert who worked at the forefront of technological development in Korea’s display industry for 26 years, Professor Kim developed numerous world-first technologies, including a 47-inch display switchable between 2D and 3D. He also first established the Generalized Extended Jones Matrix method, extending the widely used Extended Jones Matrix analysis to successive interfaces that are not mutually parallel.

An expert in industry–university cooperation who has promoted diverse collaborations for the future, he joined POSTECH in 2017 as Korea’s first industry-integrated professor. Since then, he has actively researched liquid-crystal-based antennas, DC–DC converters, VR/AR/MR, and other fields.

Professor Kim is particularly active in leading POSTECH’s educational innovation based on VR, AR, MR, and the metaverse. Through this work, POSTECH established the world’s first MR classroom and continues bold educational innovation by expanding an advanced teaching system that moves between real and virtual environments.

POSTECH is currently known as the only university in the world providing VR devices to every undergraduate for educational purposes.

His contributions to industry, scholarship, and education earned him the ministerial commendation for the 57th Science Day.
