Oh-tae Jang, an integrated master's/Ph.D. student in POSTECH's Department of Electrical Engineering advised by Professor Kyung-tae Kim, received an Outstanding Paper Award at the Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences' 2024 Fall Conference for “A Study on Automatic Target Detection and Recognition based on SAR Imagery.”

The paper proposed automatic target detection and recognition using data from imaging radar systems. In particular, it designed a robust algorithm to reliably identify targets in complex environments with severe background-noise interference.

It was recognized for enabling highly reliable target estimation by improving detection and recognition accuracy and promoting stable loss-function convergence. The work also demonstrated the effectiveness and applicability of preprocessing that removes unknown clutter.
