Ji-hwan Lee, a master’s student in POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering (advisor: Professor Wonbin Hong), has been selected for the 2025 Presidential Science Scholarship for Graduate Students, jointly administered by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Student Aid Foundation.

The Presidential Science Scholarship is Korea’s largest scholarship program for graduate students in science and engineering. Each year, it selects and supports students with outstanding research capabilities and growth potential. This year, 2,355 applicants applied across 17 science and engineering fields, and Lee was honored to be selected as a recipient.

His research objective is a “Multifocal Spatial Beamforming System Based on a Holographic Time-Reversal Mirror.” Moving beyond conventional forward antenna design, he proposed an inverse antenna design principle that determines antenna geometry from the electromagnetic response at the receiving location. The work was highly regarded for its technical excellence: the multifocal spatial beam-focusing antenna technique concentrates beam energy at specific points in space according to user location while precisely controlling polarization and beam shape.

The award ceremony is scheduled for early next year. Recipients will receive certificates in the President’s name at an event recognizing and celebrating their research achievements.
