Professor Jaeho Lee of POSTECH’s Department of Electrical Engineering has been selected with NAVER Cloud for the “Independent AI Foundation Model” project, which selects elite teams to represent Korea in AI.
Five teams—NAVER Cloud, Upstage, SK Telecom, NC AI, and LG AI Research—were selected for the project, which will receive a total of KRW 200 billion in government support for GPUs, data, personnel costs, and other needs. Professor Lee’s team is the only group at POSTECH participating in this project.
The NAVER Cloud consortium, in which Professor Lee’s laboratory participates, aims to build an independent omni foundation model to expand public access and industrial adoption. It also seeks to establish a shared national foundation of intelligence that supports real-time interaction by jointly understanding and generating text, speech, images, and video.
The consortium includes NAVER, Twelve Labs, POSTECH, Seoul National University, KAIST, Korea University, and Hanyang University.
Professor Lee’s laboratory will develop model compression and enabling technologies for low-cost training to improve the efficiency of the omni foundation model. Active practical exchanges are also planned, including sending interns to NAVER Cloud.
